Portland Public Library has an impressive cache of archived newspapers on
microfilm, dating back as far as the 1700's! I went up to the
Portland Room up on the third floor and looked through the card catalog.
There were a bunch of references to the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine.
After around 1993, articles are indexed on the library computer rather than on
index cards in the card catalog. Here are the articles that I found; I
believe they represent the lion's share of available articles related to the
hospital. Most are from the Portland Press Herald. Keep in mind that
the text and photos in this section have been transferred from the original
newspaper, some being wrinkled or otherwise damaged, to microfilm, and then reprinted from the microfilm
laser printer, and
finally, scanned and placed here. Therefore, the quality is sometimes less than
ideal.
For those that would like to do an online search, Portland Public Library has
a link to ProQuest, from where a search can be done for articles going back to
the early 90's. You may need to login by using your Portland Public
Library card barcode number or an URSUS library barcode. From
PPL's main site, go
to MARVEL (under Research Tools), then to MAINE NEWSTAND. You login and it
brings you to ProQuest searchable full text articles.
